DIME Weapons

with 18 comments

This post was written in 2006, but is getting a lot of traffic due to current events  in Gaza. For my thoughts on the current situation in Gaza start with Why They Hate Us.  Doug Stych, 13 January, 2009.

There are reports that Israel is using a new weapon in the Gaza strip. More specifically, the claim is that Israel is using something called a DIME weapon. Say what? Yes, DIME weapons are real, it stands for Dense Inert Metal Explosive. In a nutshell a DIME weapon is a bomb or missile that detonates with powerful and lethal explosive power confined to a small area. The idea being to minimize “collateral damage” when using military weapons in urban areas. Yes, this is a humane killing device, science marches on!

No one has ever underestimated the human capacity for lethal cleverness, so it’s not surprising to me that this weapon is being developed. Some claims about these weapons do not appear to be substantiated, that it is highly carcinogenic and toxic to the environment for example. The injuries caused by these weapons are supposed to be especially severe, that’s what tipped doctors in Gaza that something new was afoot, they were getting patients with terrible injuries but no chunks of shrapnel in their bodies. Is it proved that Israel is using DIME weapons? Not yet, but there’s certainly no reason they wouldn’t be. Since these weapons don’t officially exist yet, there are no international laws or standards that can be applied to them.

Israel’s possible use of DIME bombs and missiles aside, what bothers me most about these weapons (and other exotic weapons in development) is the driving philosophy behind them. Superficially these will be touted as a humane weapon because they do not spread shrapnel over a large area, and they can be used in dense urban areas without causing widespread death and destruction. An assassins weapon, one could blow up the suspect house on a block without killing (too many) of the neighbours. The responsible urban warrior’s dream weapon, right?

Wrong. The problem with this kind of solution is that it is based on the idea that if one can just kill certain people the problem is solved. “Kill all the bad guys” is a fairy tale, because it assumes that one knows who the bad guys are, and it ignores the effect this killing has on other people. The underlying assumption that holds sway in Israel and the USA is this idea that if they can just kill enough of their enemies, it will lead to victory. This modern version of inquisition type thinking is so prevalent in the west that it goes unquestioned. Israel’s attack on Lebanon was akin to “trimming back the crabgrass” to some. Because it is sometimes legitimate to take up the sword in defense of one’s home is not a blanket justification for violence anywhere anyhow in the name of “defense.” It’s circular reasoning at best.

Sadly it’s a bloody circle. Violence is the problem, not the solution. War is a failure mode, whether implemented by terrorists or nation states. When war is used as an occupation strategy, the chances of success are zero. Unless genocide and ethnic cleansing is your goal. Is that Israel’s ultimate goal in the occupied territories? Beats me, all I know is that decades of increasingly lethal Israeli weapons haven’t stemmed the violence. One more lethal weapon in their arsenal is just another sad chapter in the tit for tat madness that has plagued Palestine for decades.

It’s also simplistic to think that better weapons lead to anything but a very temporary advantage over one’s enemies, and they can even be a disadvantage. That’s for a future post.

They all hold swords,
Being expert in war.
Every man has his sword on his thigh
Because of fear in the night.

  1. US and Israel are not open to any citicizm of their own terroristism and start calling the name “terrorists” when someone critisse their wars of agreessions.

Israel or US can’t kill all the bad guys with their aggressive policies of invasions. US and Israel if really want peace than they have to admit their mistakes with opening up their minds and hearths that the other side also has the right to exist.

Peaceful solution of Middle East is possible.

  4. Unitedcats, you must have nine (lives, that is) ;)Doug I’ve emailed you the Congo material, hope it flies through the cyberspace ether and reaches your inbox in tact.

On a slightly different, but relevant, topic, that of mutual Israel-Palestine peace efforts (particularly the forging of non-official, people-to people ties): In addition to the good links you have already pointed to such as Hello Peace, there is also this great listingof joint Pal-Isr peace-building initiatives.

  5. The interesting and ironic thing is, from the description of the devices, they are a very sophisticated version of the nail-packed suicide bombs that have been used so effectively against Israeli targets.

  8. Hi,
Not sure if this weapon which is being used by Israel against the Palestinian children does actually suit the Zionists, throughout my life I have seen the Zionist love seeing blood and enjoy killing children, unfortunate for them them using this type of weapon they cannot have both because it does not give them the enjoyment they want, the reason being that this weapon causes mainly internal bleeding, what a pity.

I had though they should have learnt from what they had suffered in Europe during world war two, having said this I assure them they will pay a lot for their crimes against the humanity either sooner or later..

  9. I don’t know why the Jews love and enjoy to kill anyone who is non-Jewish – no matter if he or she is a child, old, disabled or weak. And, if they not be able to do so by themselves, they work diabolically to instigate other humans, who would be able to do so, to kill, which all the same gives them the same enjoyment. Take the example of Judas who instigated the Romans to kill Jesus (pbuh). Also, take the other many examples, such as the World Wars, the Gulf wars, and all the wars in the world today, which you will find that their hidden hands played in them to happen. At the end of any war, you will find that they were the only ones who benefited from them. Look at the two World Wars, which no one else benefited from them, except the Jews. It gave them a country, new laws that protect them alone, a financial gain, a power to rule the whole world, of course behind the scenes, including America and all Europe (east and west). They became more bloodthirsty than they used to be, otherwise, why they don’t want the whole world to live in peace. Why they didn’t accept to all the Palastinians and the Arabs’ bitter concessions, which lets them take the whole of Palastine (which, by the way, they forcefully took it from the palastinians, with the help of the British colonialists) and accept for the Palastinians to live on only 20% of their motherland. Instead, due to their bloodthirsty behavior, they chose an ever-going war than peace. But, remember violence breeds violence. Of course, this might scare me and you, but not the Jews. To them it is their paramount rejoice.

These are the Jews, and it is not strange for them to do so. But, what about the Americans and the Europeans. Did the Jews out smarted them and hypnotized them, by making them follow their agendas like herds. I don’t understand how George Bush says about all these massacres and genocides (a real Holocaust) which is happening in front of his eyes as a “self-defense” of the Jews. I don’t understand what logic Mr Bush is using. I don’t understand, how the Jews, who used to live side by side in peace with their Arab neighbours; and for ages, need to defend themselves, when they are the ones who betrayed their Arab neighbours’ kindness hospitality and turned against them and kicked them out of their homeland; and for those who remained and couldn’t flee, made them live in ghettoes and in poverty and still chasing, either to kill them or to kick them out of what left for them as a homeland. Now, tell me, Mr Bush, if you are a good Christian, who is supposed to defend itself – the Jews or the Palastinians?

  10. Interesting comments – Its not my war or fight but I think that when there is such entrenched violence in the ME it might not be a bad idea to let them all go hell for leather at each other and let who ever is left standing take the spoils. I don’t think the pain and suffering would be any less than the 60 years they have had so far, that is unless you’re on the loosing side – But then that’s what you get for thousands of years of stupidity.

Clearly there is not going to be a diplomatic solution – as neither side knows how to be honest and religious retoric won’t allow it, so ultimately if these weapons achieve your mentioned possible goal of ethnic cleansing they may have a benefit if not, it like every other solution to date will be a waste of time.

  11. “Wrong. The problem with this kind of solution is that it is based on the idea that if one can just kill certain people the problem is solved.”

Maybe you need an History Lesson. And that is at minimum.

Now apply your morality to rockets indiscriminate bombing of civilians…

To MOHAMMED, it is in the zionists country that Arab Children have more life expectancy…
Like all hypocrites when Arabs kill Arabs or Persians everything is fine.

  12. “Now apply your morality to rockets indiscriminate bombing of civilians…”

Whether in this case, or when Olmert ordered the attack on Gaza…in both case middle aged men gave young men orders that they knew would result in the deaths of innocents. Because Israel isn’t “targeting” innocents makes no difference to the dead and maimed. The western public may be fooled, God is not so easily duped.

The Hamas rocket launchers and the members of the IDF who only killed civilians because of “collateral damage” are both in for a big surprise when they meet their maker.

“Thou shalt not kill” is very clear. War is the problem, it’s not the solution.

  13. Israel and America can never get peace by distributing distubance around the world because rules of nature are very simple, peace for peace and blood for blood.

  14. Frankly, the whole region is a mess. And there are many players with many motives. But the weapon “DIME” does not seem more destructive than the IDE’s and the Nail Bombs and the other articles of war that have been issues by BOTH sides. It an evolution of madness, something that was invented the fire day gun powered was used to project something at another human.

Hamas and the IRIANIAN THUGS are mostly to blame. They have little else to do but to distort the writing of the Quran and the Bible. Those that thwart the word of God will in the end pay with these souls in the mean time man pays for their grief’s and bearing of inhumanity. SHAME ON THOSE THAT HIDE BEHIND MASK, CHILDREN, WOMEN, THE ELDERLY!

So to get off my soap box and the fact is that if one thinks the DIME is a weapon will take WAR to a new level you are sadly mistaken. The are dark projects on the horizon that will be unleashed and will be the downfall of civilization as we know it. US, JEW, ARAB, CHINESE, JAPENSE and the list goes on……

  15. The comments about Jewish people wanting kill non jewish people are insane.

The possibility of Israel using a specific weapon is all very interesting. Yet to many here it is a given that Israel is using the alleged weapon and having reached that conclusion, it must prove something about Israel’s humanity or lack thereof.

I see no comments from Israel’s critics about the continuous rocketing of civilians in Israeli cities by Hamas and its allies. Why is that?

I can be quite critical of Israel vis a vis the settlements in the West Bank. But it seems to me that there is a large audience here who have as their real agenda the dismantling of the State of Israel. If that is your position, then state it and stop whining when the State of Israel resists your urge for its destruction.

    • Any generalization about one people wanting to kill another is insane, though extremists who espouse just that do come in all ilks. I decry all terrorist attacks, including those of Hamas. They are almost always counterproductive, as well as being human right’s violations. If Hamas had been able to restrain themselves last fall or not formally renounced the cease-fire their PR position vis-a-vis the world would be better now, but that doesn’t change the fact that Israel launched a carefully planned military attack that was wildly disproportionate to the provocation. Israel will emerge from this less secure than before. Firepower, no matter how selectively applied, does not guarantee victory in war. IMHO
