World’s Dumbest Terrorists?

with 5 comments

The breaking news this morning is that a small bag of white powder was found in a Las Vegas hotel room, and preliminary tests indicate it is ricin, a deadly poison that is made from Castor beans. The police even say Castor beans were found as well. The FBI has already ruled out terrorism, which is doublespeak for “they are looking into it.” Granted, it’s hard to imagine why terrorists or anyone would be making ricin in a Las Vegas hotel room. My first guess is that this will not turn out to be ricin after all. My second guess is that it will turn out to be a simple criminal plan of some sort, it is Vegas after all. Lastly it may never be explained, and we will be left wondering it it was some spook operation designed to test our nation’s response or heighten our uncertainty level regarding terrorism or whatever.

I know I worry about terrorism. More specifically, I worry about what will happen if there is even a modest terrorist attack inside the USA. My fear is that “hysterical over-reaction” will be a wild understatement. Many Americans are still absolutely convinced that we are involved in an epic struggle of good vs evil, and once people convinces themselves that they are the heroic defenders of the faith…anything goes. There’s a lot of precedent in the historical record for this sort of thing, and it’s not a pretty picture. Unfortunately the real world is vastly more complicated than “good vs evil,” and often great evil is done in the name of protecting good.

In other news, the most bizarre presidential campaign in American history continues. I’m not sure if it’s interesting or irrelevant. Or maybe I’m just getting older and more cynical. A lot of the campaign sure seems irrelevant, one of the latest issues is Osama’s middle name for god’s sake. None of the mainstream candidates really wants to talk about the two elephants in the room: A two trillion dollars plus endless war, and the collapsing American economy.

Could the war and the economy be related? Fortunately, no, as Bush recently explained when asked if the war had anything to do with the country’s economic problems:

“Bush: I don’t think so. I think actually, the spending on the war might help with jobs.

“Curry: Oh, yeah?

“Bush: Yeah, because we’re buying equipment, and people are working. I think this economy is down because we built too many houses.”

Wow. So the solution to the problem is to stop building houses and spend even more money on war? Money that we have to borrow from the Chinese? I dunno. This man is the president? The comptroller general of the USA just quit because thinks the government’s borrowing and spending has gotten put of control, I’m pretty sure more borrow and spend isn’t going to help.

The Drudge Report, my favourite hand on the pulse of middle America, has leaked the news that Prince Harry was fighting in Afghanistan. (That’s Prince Harry, third in line for the British throne, not Harry Potter.) He has of course been pulled out now, for the good reason it wasn’t fair to his fellow soldiers to keep him there…every suicide bomber in Afghanistan was homing in on him. Suicide bombers are just low tech cruise missiles, they may be slow and carry a small warhead…but they can seek their target forever and get past sophisticated security measures. And they don’t show up on radar. Harry’s being hailed as a hero in the UK, they are infected with the same sort of imperial blather that the English are always so good at…somehow British armies fighting in the tribal regions of central Asia has something to do with protecting Britain. Last I heard, only thirty percent of the country was under the control of our enlightened crusaders. Yeah, that’s going well.

Anyhow, happy February 29th everyone. I wonder what the world will be like the next time this date rolls around in 2012? I suspect a lot is going to happen in the next four years. A lot is going to happen this weekend, I am planting my victory garden. I urge everyone to do the same, in act I think it’s the most patriotic thing any American can do right now…the more self sufficient we are, the less the government has to do for us. Maybe this can be how the left and right can agree in America, let’s all plant victory gardens. The lefties can claim they are fighting global warming and the corporate food industry, the righties can claim they are reducing American’s dependence on government handouts. We all win.

Have a great weekend everyone!

(The above image of a World War One victory garden predates 1927 and is public domain under US copyright law. I think it was taken in Northampton, Massachusetts. And if a victory garden is too much trouble, at least check out this book: Edible Landscaping.)

  1. Here’s what we do, we get all our money and our stuff and we put it in a big pile. Then we take all the first born and we put them on top of the pile and we light it on fire, and then we dance.

  2. If you don’t like that idea, explain to me why George Bush isn’t impeached.

  3. I think I can explain that… because a few people with A LOT of money don’t want him to be.

  4. Interestingly, Andrew, some of the money that gets thrown on that big pile to be burnt gets diverted into private hands. I understand Exxon executives have done quite well.

  5. What a moron this guy is!!!

I suspect that he will go down in history as the most “higher brain function” deficient president in history!

This guy makes Kadafi sound like a genius!

Why we even kept up with this guys stupidity for 4 years and then reelect him for another 4 is beyond me, although I suspect that the electoral process has been hijacked and is no longer a free election ideology!
