1. I wonder what inspires somebody to do these? I mean you don’t get any credit for it if you blame it on aliens….if any of the crop circles are real(not made by humans consciously), they still may not have anything to do with aliens though. They could be some explainable phenomenon we just do not understand yet…how long have they been around I wonder, and how old is the oldest crop circle? Did you see any old drawings or sketches of crop circles in your research Doug? The oldest I found was the “Mowing devil” lol

2. People engage in all sorts of frivolous meaningless activity because it gives them pleasure, it’s also very likely a ritualistic activity with some tied into nature and spiritual activities.

   None of the historical finds seems terribly promising to me. There’s nothing that even remotely resembles the modern drawings, unless you start comparing to things like the Nazca Lines. Heck, there’s the UK’s own version, the various hill figures:

   And it’s not surprising to me if there’s weather phenomena that might occasionally make swirled circles of flattened grass/grain, that would account for historical accounts.

   For my last post I’ll try and dig deep and see if I can come up with something truly un-explained re UFOs.

I wanted to comment on the end of your bit … “So it would seem to reason if there were anthropomorphic aliens who had been using math for thousands of years longer than us, it wouldn’t be too hard to express a mathematical law or geometric theorem in a crop circle that humans had never seen before. And so far, if aliens are making crop circles, they have been using only mathematics and geometry that humans are already familiar with.”

   The truth is, that information would only come after establishing some sort of communication with them. How have humans tried to communicate with aliens so far? The truth is, we do it by using VERY simple math and physics formulas that we consider universal laws … things like prime number sequences and the relationship of pi to a circle. We tend not to send out a detailed description of the theory of relativity … instead we send out information about atomic properties of elements like hydrogen in an effort to find some common ground through which we can establish some communications.

   If aliens are trying to communicate with us, it would do them little good to send us advanced math, at least not before they’ve established common ground to communicate through. They would tend to send us basic things that they speculate we would already know about … basic math proofs, prime number sequences, the geometry of a circle, the makeup of elements.

   I’m not trying to argue that crop circles are anything but a hoax, but I think one of your key points for declaring them so is flawed. For first contact, the ONLY way two alien civilizations will understand each other is through finding common conceptual ground to work from, and that will almost certainly involve very basic, very old information rather then the cutting edge of modern research. That’s because things like prime number sequences and the geometry of a circle are thought to be “universal laws” that aliens would recognize as much as we would. Any alien trying to contact us would need to do the same thing … find things that they think we will recognize and understand, and the best place to start with that, IMO, is with basic math proofs that are millenia old.

   • Well, yes and no, I think I stated my case a little too narrowly. Assuming these intricate patterns are created by a mind, and I think that’s a safe assumption, few if any are claiming they are a product of natural processes. If that is the case, then if the patterns were being created by a non-human mind, we would expect to see at least SOME elements, motifs, symbols, patterns, and yes, mathematics, that humans had never seen before. Not only wouldn’t it be that hard, it would be hard not to give themselves away so to speak.

     And yet we don’t see that, we only see designs and motifs that clearly spring from human minds and human culture. For a crop circles to be the product of alien minds, it’s aliens that have a vast deep understanding of human symbols and are taking great pains to avoid using ANYTHING unfamiliar to humans. Going to painstaking lengths to avoid giving away the fact that they are aliens hardly sounds like an attempt at communication.

     I’ll certainly grant that the lack of alien content does not constitute proof that crops circles aren’t made by aliens, but it’s certainly a strong argument that they aren’t.

     • Good point … we would expect to see something that we didn’t recognize, or at least a re-statement of a “basic principle” in a way that was completely new to us. The lack of ANYTHING “non-human” does raise questions for sure, but I would still frankly expect us to see a lot of recognizable forms in any attempt by an alien intelligence to contact us. They would likely betray their alienness, but that betrayal, I tend to think, would be the exception, not the rule. We should probably expect to see recognizable forms like prime number sequences, but we might also expect those forms to be presented in unusual ways that are unfamiliar to us.

     • Well we all know that its possible for people to make a crop circle, but did you know that the crops arent just stampled to the ground? Each individual straw has been processed, like heat threated or somehow and streched in the joints. And all straws face the same direction. So if you are planning to heat every single straw and strech them in one single night you need to be fast. Even with hundreds of people its impossible to do it in one night. And with people walking inside the crop, it would leave dirt and gravel on top of the straws, footprints, dna… Its to hard for regular people to make this…

4. Stumbled upon this sorry for being late…

   You said ‘…and crop circles continued to appear, more intricate and mysterious every year.’

   And you’re absolutely right – and quite possibly the seed of an explanation is sprouting in that very sentence. Scientific analysis of crop circles however has shown that many are caused to lie flat by heat affecting a particular part of the plant. So briefly what am I getting at? I’m getting at the fact they still appear and in more complex, intricate forms (Why should this be the case? What might that tell us in itself?) Well, it reflects progressive technology.

   If a particular technology is responsible for creating them (or at least some of them) then one would expect that as the technology advances so the patterns would become more complex, more intricate. And that’s precisely what we are witniessing. It’s certainly worthy of consideraton. More so given we now know that our satellites are capable of transmitting highly focused microwaves towards earth.

   Just one other thing I’d like to point out if you don’t mind. There was a ‘reply’ received in the form of a crop circle to Carl Sagan’s ‘message’ which he beamed into space many years ago – Our message included our DNA composition, location etc. The reply came back in the form of binary code in a crop circle representing DNA (which is presumed was the DNA profile of whoever replied) as well as a host of other information all of which was represented in binary code. It certainly caught the imagination and attention of many scientists though I think the majority, like me, think the adavancements we are making in microwave technology, and the proximity of these crop circle formations to defence research facilities contains a large clue in itself.

8. too bad you have to relate crop circles to “ufos” or silly people with too much time on their hands. why is that?…why can’t there be another explanation?…lets say the earth herself makes them. oh no, we can’t have that! really? whynot. why can’t we entertain the idea of the earth as a conscious being?…ever read the book “the secret life of plants”? i know on one has yet to do any science on the matter, but perhaps it is time. afterall, they are studying the origins of the universe, black holes, the tiniest pieces of matter, etc. etc. why not focus on the earth herself. i have a theory about why we don’t. its call’d denial. instead of taking care of business here on our home, we can pretend we are figuring out important stuff. lets say the earth is conscious and she (whynot) wants to communicate to us. how does she do it?…crop circles could be messages of great importance…but hey, we’re busy with important stuff, like figuring out how black holes work, or what existed before the big bang….just a few thoughts…

   • Same problem as with an alien origin, if crop circles are messages from some non-human intelligence, why do none of them contain imagery, symbols, or mathematics of non-human origin? And a lot of people have studied them, no one has discerned any message yet that I am aware of. And if the Earth itself were conscious and capable of communicating, one would think it would have multiple unmistakable avenues of communication. In any event though, I agree it is unfortunate that all sorts of “fringe” things are off-limits to mainstream scientists because of our biases/stigma about what is and isn’t worthy of study. —Doug

   A convincing arguement is made for the fact that all mathematics, geography, art, written language, agriculture, architecture, essentially all culture, is of “non-human origins.” We’re told, in the Vedas, Talmud, Popul Vuh, Gnosticism, even the one-and-only Holy Bible, that these things descended to us from the god(s). In Egyptian lore, Thoth was the bearer of math, building, geography: all things we now take for granted.
   Not to put words in your mouth, but it seems that you are saying that simply because you recognize the symbols elements, that they are of human origin. Your argument looks through the wrong end of the telescope. You, yourself, may be so intimate with mathmatical theorems that it’s second nature for you, but this hasn’t always been the case for humanity, and isn’t even the case for much of the world now. Breathing, taking a crap, fornicating, killing and eating may all very well be of human origin, but complex math like geometry, and trigonometry isn’t. These are “alien concepts” that our human brain needed to be trained to understand, let alone master–as some of these formations clearly demonstrate.
   I dispute this premise of “non-human origin” as the litmus test, the so called “smoking gun,” of their authenticity. I don’t see why that’s such an issue. There’s plenty of things in our world clearly of human origin that are no less baffeling to us; things obviously man-made, but no less alien. The carbeurator of the internal combustion engine, for example. Let’s say there was a perfect rendering of said carb: would one still be able to decypher the meaning? Look at Stonehenge, the pyramids at Giza, the earthen lines in the Nazca plains of Peru, cave drawings. Manmade, sure, but what is their meaning?
   Seeing these symbols only on some superficial level of the shapes being the totality of the meaning, is an untenable view. Sure there exists circles, squares, triangles, straight and crooked lines. I’ll concede that they’re recognizable shapes to humans, but that doesn’t make them necessarily “of human origin.” Those shapes are simply the building blocks. It’s the way the whole image is constructed; the nature of multiple similar, and dissimilar, shapes which are compounded to create new, and foreign designs. Let’s just say, for the sake of this discussion, that the following shapes are of human origin: a vesica pisces, a turnbuckle, rings, straight lines. These are, essentially, the individual elements comprising the so-called Dolphinograms (“http://www.cropcircleship.com/wiki/Image:Hy24.gif”). Even if I’m accepting that the individual elements are man-made, the completed formation is still unusual, and “alien.”
   Let’s say, again for the sake of this discussion, that ALL of these symbols are of human origin. So what? If we accept that these formations, the real non-hoaxed ones, are meant as a form of communication, does it make any sense for the communicators to present their message in some alien language? If you’re trying to communicate with someone, it’s obvious that there needs to be a commonality of understanding. Symbols and mathematics satisfy that requirement.
   I maintain that the overwhelming majority of Crop Formations, historically, have not been created by human hands, or human deeds, since first reported in the 1700’s; but if they are “human” made, these formations are no less alien and mysterious to us. They resonate on some subliminal level that our modern “scientific” endoctrination has suppressed. I would make a good case that symbols themselves are alien to our present-day Culture of Twitter. If it’s not spelled-out in 140 characters or less, we can’t be bothered to figure it out.

   Who are the aliens? If I’m saying that the majority are not hoaxes, if not done by humans, then who/what is doing them? Like it or not, this is where the discussion starts getting metaphysical. Basically, they are a manifestation projected from a different dimension(s). For the sake of this discussion, simply assume that they’re 4-D beings. That’s probably easier to digest than if they were 11th-D individuals. What one needs to understand is that there are all sorts of “angels,” spirits, and etheric beings of other dimensions, or density levels. There are, in fact a small number of alien beings residing on Earth. There really is an amazing cross sections of “people” living on this planet. Here we would have to be very generous in our description of refering to some beings as “human”, or as “people”. All these beings have free will because they get to chose. Some chose to enslave others. Some chose to help others.
   Thinking of this in terms of mind, we ask what is consciousness? Our consciousness exists while we’re sleeping. During this time, our consciousness leaves our bodies, and enters a dimension other than the 3-D world. It is spirit at that point. It’s still us, as a human, it’s attached to our body, or a part of it is anyway. So, once that consciousness leaves our body, it goes 4th, 5th, 6th -D, whatever. So from that state, given the proper tool, a human consciousness could create those shapes.
   In our 5-senses-limited-3-Dimensional world, we can see an actual example of 2-D being: a flatfish, so-called fluke. It’s flat and circular, like a pancake with fins. Both eyes are on one side of its body. Within its world, anything to the side of it doesn’t exist. It couldn’t see me crouched down below its horizon of sight, therefore I wouldn’t exist. It’s also a thinking, feeling being, so it would sense that I was there. It’s more primative than the simplest 3-D human, but yet that fish would grasp the meaning of those formations directly relating to, say for example, water. So, if you can imagine a being, call it human or not, but of 4 dimensions, you’de never really see him/her/it, except for the tinyest of cross sections, a plane, which resides in our common time-space.
   Terrence McKenna posits that our soul is foreign to us. Science, scientists, religion, materialism have caused us to become alienated from our true selves. So in essence, that which we can’t see, hear, touch, taste, or feel with our hands is unknown, and therefore alien. If we only use 10% of our brains, at best, what is happening in the other 90%? Let’s be real: how much brain power is being used during World of Warcraft, or any video game, for that matter? So, if only 2% of our mind is being used, that equals 98% of our own head being alien to us.
   Perhaps the crop formations are meant as a way to help us, by getting us to think about “primative” symbols, motifs, projections which conjur something familiar, yes. Something primal, yes. Something understood, or overstood? Well, maybe not. Hopefully, by looking at the shape, it brings forth something resonent in your mind, and spirit.
   Nature is so alien to homo saps, that if these were done by the Earth Herself, it would be as if created by some kinda extra-terrestrial. Somewhere in here, natural processes are used–behold, alien technology. Essentially, Christianity as a religion, killed nature and religions based on it. So we’re at the point of calling witches anyone who understands nature, and natural processes. The symbols, motiffs, formations aren’t just familiar to mind, they’re organic to it.

   You look in the wrong place for evidence of “alien” creation in these things. The evidence lay not in the symbols them selves, which are universal, but in the way they are created. Actual witnesses, those who study these formations can tell you there is a noticable difference between the human made ones, and those produced by the balls of light which are consistently reported in association with the formations.
   One of the biggest differences comes from how the stalks are laid down. In the human-made ones, the stalks are broken, not bent. There is no pattern to the lain stalks; it rather looks a mess, a hodge-podge of stalks. With the light ball produced ones, not only is there descernable patterns, but they actually layered in such an organized pattern, representing a wide variety of “strokes” used to create a number of different textures, and directions within the fallen grains–much like one would use a paint brush to create texture and “shading” on a flat canvas. The most amazing of these textures are the ones where the stalks are bent 8, or 9 inches above the ground. To date, no human being has been able to reproduce that particular “pattern.” In the human produced ones, the stalks are ameteurishly broken, more often destroyed. Whereas, in the light-ball produced ones, the plants are not only still living, but actually do better on account of the treatment..
   There’s also the fact that in the light-ball produced ones, there’s the presence of a black, charred substanced which, under chemical analysis is determined to be amorphous iron. The human prodeced ones can’t reproduce that. Within the stalks themselves, tiny holes appear in the bent area, where steam vapour is released. They know it’s steam because that particular area shows a lower content of water. Additionally, eyewitnesses report clouds of steam that accompany the production of the formations. Humans can’t/don’t create that when they hoax these things.
   There’s also the fact that crossing over the boundry of a real crop formation will play havoc on electronics. Consistently, people report their cameras, phones, other electronic recording devices start to malfunction once the threshold of the Formation is crossed. People have regularly reported their devices failing, and internal components “frying.” Alkaline batteries regularly stop working. Eyewitnesses have reported odd time shifts: losing time, watches not working, or stopping altogether. Man-made formations don’t produce any of the above.
   When crossing the boundry of the light ball produced formations, people have reported unusual and disorienting effects in their body: nausea, headaches, anxiety, other body reaction. Hoaxed circles don’t produce physiological effects, or none that anyone’s reported.
   Immediately preceding the light ball produced formations sounds are heard, such as a crackling, humming, and/or a trilling sound. Eyewitness’ exposed to this sound claim it’s unique to the formations. No sounds of that calibre are reported accompanying human-produced formations.
   Do we need to talk about the presence of footprints leading too-and-fro and/or within the formations themselves?
   The hoaxers would have us focus on the superficiality of the designs themselves, as if that shallow element is the most paramount. Yet even by that standard, the hoaxed ones are visually inferior to the light-ball produced designs. Within the light-ball produced ones, there is a precision, and skill missing in the human produced ones. This may be their most obvious, therefore most notable feature in decyphering hoax. When plotted on “the grid” they are mathematically/physically perfect, or as near-perfect as produced by any machine. The points match-up. The geometry is spot on. New things are actually revealed in their precision. The hoaxes are obvious from this standard.

   If I assume for the sake of this conversation that mankind invented mathematics with no help from “the gods,” what of the crop formations? Is it true that NONE of these are alien to mankind?
   Let’s look at the so-called “Julia Set” of 1996 (“http://cropcircleconnector.com/Sorensen/classics/classics.html”); on Salisbury Hill, just a stone’s throw from Stonehenge. The Julia Set is one of the fractal designs. Fractals exist in nature in the form of trees, leaves, coastal shorelines, rivers, etc. It’s an uphill battle to consider a fractal to be of human origin. Even though we can represent these forms with the assistence of a powerful computer, certainly that hasn’t always been the case.
   On a different note, bystanders at the time this was made claim that the ’96 Julia Set appeared within a 15-30 minute window; yet researchers surveying the site took about 5 hours to survey, measure, and to do all the stuff that they do.
   It is true that these symbols are familiar to us, from our modern perspective. Our society does suffer from an information overload.

   Also, the 1991 “Mandelbrot Set” in Cambridgeshire (“http://www.greatdreams.com/crop/mndlbrt/mandlbrt.htm”), another Crop Formation fractal, is notable in its mathematical perfection.
   I would submit, that to our so-called scientifically advanced society, a simple circle can be baffeling. In Western society, a circle might be considered a simple thing, easily revealing its secrets. From our so-called advanced perspective, we might even think the lowly, primative circle has no secrets to offer. But is that so? To Euclid, the numerical value of pi was mystery. Figuring the area of circles was a mystery. These days computers can figure pi to thousands of places; our hand-held calculators can instantly figure the area of a circle. Does that mean that this “man-made” symbol has no secrets to divulge; that it isn’t indeed baffeling? I mean, think of it, what if it were a game: If you had the tool of pi, how would you play with those circles, rings, and curves?
   In Eastern societies, a simple circle is a different matter. It has the value of The Void. It also means completion: wholeness, inclusion, even healing in certain circles. It’s the beginning and end, at the same time. By extension, that simple circle symbol mayhaps be of human origins, but is equally no less baffeling to Western “ruler straight” logical thinking. In addition, there are a growing number of symbols relating to Eastern religion, philosophy, an/or metaphysics.
   There’s the 1996 Ecthilhampton work, which is quite amazing in its scope, “a chain of circles and pathways approximately 4100 feet long crossed from one end of a field to another” (http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~mark.haywood/html/etchilhampton-1996.html.) What makes this more interesting is the glyph on the top, resembling the solar plexus chakra. The symbol may appear also as a horse with its tail up, in this case signifying the Egyptian sphinx.
   Are the hoaxers that familiar with the totality of man’s symbolic history, whereby they’re able to accurately represent these forgotten languages, Eastern esoteric symbols, heiroglyphics, Mayan symbolism, cave drawings, and other arcane pictoglyphs? To believe that body of 5, no less 8, people are that knowledgable and capable of that degree of precision, to me, requires a monumental effort of faith.

   These just aren’t true. What new mathematic theorem was created last year? What new geometrical theorum has been discovered, or invented the year before? Or the one before that? In the last 30 years, what new geometrical theorems have you come up with, for that matter? In point of fact, new mathematical formulas are NOT being introduced all the time– certainly not new geometric formulas. Let’s take Euclid, from 300BC, as an example. In his treatise, Elements, which details his theorems, postulates, he details a number of theorems.
   However, there are still some missing. According to Gerald Hawkins:
   [cite]”…[these theorems] are not in Euclid’s books. I think he missed them, and I can show you a point in his long treatise where they should be–in Book 13, after proposition 12. There he had a complicated triangle-circle theorem, and these would naturally follow. Another reason why he missed them was that we are pretty sure that he didn’t know the full set of perfect diatonic ratios in 300BC” (Hawkins 1991).[/cite]

   In the course of analyzing the other symbols, almost by accident, he discovers a fifth, more generalized theorem from which all the others were derived.

   There’s a difference between seeing something, and creating something. It’s one thing to see a bird in flight, knowing it is heavier-than-air movement, and a whole other order of operations to invent a means of actually realizing that vision. This reminds me of persons who upon hearing an amazing story, second-hand, subsequently forget where they heard it, yet liking it so much they adopt it as their own.
   If I accept your first statement as true, then it summarily needs to be recognized that some of these symbols, motifs, patterns haven’t been used, seen, or even recognized by humans for quite a number of years, perhaps hundreds of them. Notable examples are the so-called Mayan Glyphs. One such example is the July 1996 “Hunab Ku,” in Wiltshire, UK (http://www.diagnosis2012.co.uk/new6.htm). Certainly, any 10-year old may recognize the crescent, the spiral, and firey ring which comprise the symbol. That said, however, I couldn’t imagine the last, or first, time that you’ve ever used that symbol. I couldn’t tell you the first time I’ve seen that symbol as, say, I’m walking down the street.
   The 2001 Chilbolton Pictoglyph–the reply to the 1974 message sent by NASA from the Aricebo telescope (http://www.alien-ufos.com/religion-spirituality-ufos-aliens-religion/12890-mayan-calender-crop-circles-proof-no-hoax.html). This formation is notable in the fact that it occured in a field quite near a secure facility. This reply has been studied, and figured-out to some extent.
   We can also look at the 02 August1991 “Milk Hill script” (“http://www.dcca.nl/art/milkhill-uk.htm”). At first, this was brushed-off as an obvious hoax. But on second glance, it was a message. If it was a hoax, shouldn’t it be easy to decipher? Gerald Hawkins thought so, but eventually had to assemble a team of 12 scholars to decipher it. 18,000 common phrases, and 42 languages later, they arrived at an acceptable solution. Hawkins and his team finally figured the message was using post-Augustan Latin. Not only that, but 6 of the 7 letters for the script were traced to an obscure Knights Templar-based alphabet. So far, no hoaxers have come forth to take claim for this deceptively simple looking formation.
   These symbols, among many others, have been studied by experts, and perhaps some not-so-experts. It’s a fallacy to claim that NOONE has been able to decypher ANY formation. Certainly, you have the choice to disagree with their findings, but that doesn’t mean that others haven’t deduced some meaning from them.
   More importantly however, is reading between the lines of what you’re actually saying. You say that none of these symbols have been created outside of man’s invention, but yet noone’s been able to decypher any meaning. Well, which is it? If they’re of human origin, surely we can easily decyper meaning of most, if not all of them, right? Yet they do seem to elude our understanding. The fact of the matter is that a number of formations do show us things we’ve never thought of before, or which show new dimensions on things seemingly fully understood previously.

   A few words on capitalism. I’m of the same mindset as you, I think, in relation to the capitalist taint on crop formations. It makes me a little squimish to see all the attempts to market them. But to me, this just seems to be the human thing to do, the human way to assimilate some pretty intense information. In the same respect that people turned the words of Jesus into a religion and subsequent business. The same might be said for the crop formations. I heard this expression: Jesus would be saddened and dissappointed by the religion that bears his name.
   People are hoaxing and staging these formations for monetary gain. There is big business in dubunking these phenomena. That money is mostly coming from the U.S., British, and German governments to try and prove they’re hoaxes.
   What is the bottom line here, in this alleged monetary equation? To me, quite simply that bottom line is that skepticism goes both ways. Logic, as with science is a double-edged sowrd. Show me the proof. If these things are faked, and hoaxed, then where are all the people doing them? If there’s so many more now, of, as you point-out increasing complexity, then where are all the hoaxers and their testimony? How come there’s not page after page of documents flooding forth to prove they’re all hoaxed, and staged as in the 1994 Halkpen Hill Formation staged by Tean Satan at the behest of Arthur C. Clark. Upon observation, when plotted to “the grid”, the missed points, the botched geometry. In all fairness, nine-fold geometry is kinda tough–that’s whey it’s historically been reserved for royalty, and “the gods.”
   Show me the proof. Show me the money. Let me see logs, journals, gps readings, longitude/latitude points, sketches, diagrams, anything from the hoaxers shoing intent. As these designs get more complex, it requires greater efficiency, great coordination amongst a great number of individuals. Remember, they’re trying not to be seen, detected, etc., so this requires an even greater attention to detain, greater planning leading up to the blessed event. Because it’s an increased amount of people who are supposed to be executing this over a relatively short period of time, with the hopes of remaining undetected, then greater planning is required. If you’re trying to convince me that any group, big or small, would undertake a task such as some of these 900+ ft. formations one just a simple whim, or the figure-it-out-as-we-go, seat-of-your-pants kinda thing, you really are crazy.
   Simply put: where is the documention from your eyewitnesses, the creators themselves? Certainly there must be dozens of people involved in the making of some 10,000 formations worldwide. With added complexity, you’re going to have to have a bigger work crew to get it done in a reasonable time, especially so as not to be detected. Look at some of the formations with 208 elements/circles. How long would it take you to do that–supposedly in the dark, nonetheless. Certainly, there must be a large number of people making these formations.
   Well, no, there isn’t. If you search for the testimony of circle hoaxers, you’re going to find about 5 people now making them, not counting the production teams who go out there to offer assistence. While there may be more people creating formations, one doesn’t hear anything significant from them. It all seems to boil down to a selective few as the hoaxers, most notably is Team Satan, (now wanting to be known as the circlemakers,). Team Satan/the circlemakers (names Rod Dickinson, John Lundberg, Will Russell), in addition to other hoaxers: Robert Irving and Jim Schnabel (occasional collaborators with Team Satan) are the ones that get called when individuals, businesses, media want to stage a hoaxing. In 2010, A production company, Zig-Zag Productions was contracted by NatGeo to essentially stage a hoax, who contacted Team Satan. In THE ANATOMY OF DECEPTION (http://www.cropcirclesecrets.org/circlemakers.html), it details paid hoaxes by The Daily Mail (UK), BBC, and other organizations.

   Ah yes, the necessity for protecting one’s self legally. Well, it is my understanding that laws and the legal system came to us, lowered from “the gods.” In which case, not really their best legacy to mankind.
   If the seekers of truth are selling their photos, I have no problems with that. If the picture was taken by someone who actually went there to view, and photograph first hand, and document the formation, then good for him/her. They deserve to EARN back some of their expenses to go over to Milk Hill, or Wiltshire, or Etchilhampton, and all the elsewheres that legitimate formations take place. These people who travel, usually at their own expense, go there to collect data, take measurements, analyze soil, photograph, do electromagnetic analysis, and perform all the other documentation that we can now read, and review.
   So, yes, why shouldn’t they protect what is theirs, that they produced by their own work? Would you want someone stealing your work, especially if it’s for the purpose of discrediting them as legitimate, does that make any sense at all?

   Indeed there is quite a business involved in these crop formations–in debunking them. Even at a staggering 10 quid per head, the farmers aren’t getting rich off these formations. You know the tax man is swinging by shortly thereafter to collect his share. The people getting the money are the ones getting paid to hoax them. You’d be wrong to think that governments aren’t spending quite a bit of money on their disinformation campaigns. It is, to me, obvious why they have an interest in “proving” them as hoaxes. Because, if these are seen as genuine, then that means that the security forces who believe they own the air would be afraid that that would give the perception that they aren’t in control of the air. That’s one of the reasons why the other ufo phenomena is propagandized as being a hoax.
   I suspect that the true teacher of Capitalism in relation to crop formations is none other than our government, the ones who created capitalism in the first place.

Heck, one publication even considered the Wallstreet Journal as experts. Surprisingly, they were suprised that they couldn’t find the hoax.
   Here in Walmart Nation, we’ve essentially replaced everything real with cheap substitutes. In our quest for cheap crap, we obtain from the lowest bidder. In our quest for lighter weight, humans have invented less-substantial, flimsier imitations of most parts that we use to construct houses, boats, other trappings of modern life. We’ve out-sourced our food, clothing, shelter, work, even our minds, to others, even sadder to corporations. We now live the “life of luxury,” where people live longer. Obtained through economic and scientific Imperialism (i.e. conquest); created, has been the alleged highest standard in the whole World, nee, the Whole Galaxy. The deification of stuff can have only one natural, logical conclusion. The procurement of stuff leads to cheaper, and cheaper substitutes of the original, real thing. Unfortunately, in the bargain of obtaining “more” (including knowledge and data), Homo Sapien Sapien (“the more man”) has lost connection with things real, of meaning. Homo Saps is now adrift.
   Where modern (Western) humankind is particularly deficient is in those things which require physical labor. The majority of people don’t know how to use tools, stomping boards, and otherwise. Thinking machines now do his work for him. For the overwhelming number of people, making those formations of say, over 200 individual elements, would be just the same as “rocket science.” We don’t manufacture things, including crop formations. Quite honestly, the work involved in doing them is incredible, if people are doing it. If you don’t think it takes a huge amount of hours, and “manpower” to do one, go ahead and try it yourself. What does yours look like? Or even better yet, try to draw one, using a pencil. What does that look like? Looks exactly the same, oh, well than try it with a paint brush. How’s that one look? Exactly the same, well, then you’re ready for the stompers, and boards, and other mechanical things they use to make them. If you think it’s that easy to do it, where ALL those formations are 3-D human made forms, then you should have no troubles doing it.
   That to me is the true total, the bottom bottom line. There is just not enough talented people out there, with the proper time to spend making all those 10,000 formations. Modern “more” man is just not capable of producing those amazing works. Those symbols evolved from a much older, more civil civilization. An intelligence both familiar and organic to us, yet as foreign and alien as our own soul.

     • An advanced case of pareidolia? Zenparadiso is obviously passionate and sincere in his beliefs, and has taken the time to write a long thoughtful comment. I’ve read McKenna and much similar stuff. Some of it is just plain wrong (the “we only use 10% of our brains” thing is 19th century folklore, now enshrined in new age thinking as “fact.”) A lot of it is, well, wildly speculative. 4th dimensional beings and such. In fact with treatises like this you can usually substitute words like Jesus and angels without loosing any meaning whatsoever, IE it’s pretty clearly a spiritual treatise. And he invokes a host of other things like ancient aliens and such to prove his point. Um, when you’re using pseudo-scientific claims to bolster your pseudo-scientific claim, well, I’m not impressed.

       However, the actual empirical evidence he raises is valid. The bent stalks and the iron residue and such. I’ve had a hard time tracking down anything even halfway definitive on that claim, if anyone has any good links. If in fact I come across anything along those lines, I’ll write a follow up post.

       Lastly, I’ll cheerfully admit I could be wrong. I’ve never seen a crop circle, and science has ignored what eventually turned out to be perfectly empirically verifiable claims before. And sadly, arch skepticism often hinders honest investigation. Anyone who says that human activity is the ONLY possible explanation for crop circles isn’t being objective in my opinion.

       Which would lead me to ask if Zenparadiso is able to make the same claim? Could they say that crop circles may possibly be simply the product of clever humans?

       You are correct. That figure these days is probably closer to 5% of our brains is actually being used. My reason for saying this: simple observation of human beings. There is clearly a “dumbing down” of the species.

       First, I don’t view objective proof as the Holy Grail that alot of so-called scientific-minded people do. The sanctity of “objective proof” is just another belief system that sucks in people who may have had an otherwise good mind.

       In a atom, there’s no objective proof that 90% of that atom is just space. It’s not objective until one looks at it through a microscope. Then, as we all know, the location of the electrons and protons change based on when and how one views them.

       I realize how hard it is, when rooted in a 3 dimensional world to conceive of a 4 dimensional world. It’s as difficult as the flounder to conceive that there is a 3 dimensional world. It’s easy enough to prove that there are beings of lower dimensions than ours, yet impossible to believe the existence of higher dimensional beings?
       Perhaps you just don’t think there exists a 4th dimension?

       As to pseudo-scientific claims, most of what I wrote is referenced in the reading materials. Since “empiracle data” is so divinely inspired to you, perhaps you should do some research on the effects of the crop formations on the actual crops.
       It’s amazing how Team Satan, and self-professed hoaxers say that there’s no evidence to distinguish the real and the faked.
       People that study the phenomena, the real, and the faked both, are able to point out a number of distinguishing characteristics in the real, not present in the faked ones. Notwithstanding the obvius footprints, and the holes where the poles are placed for ascribing their circles.

       All I’m saying is that if humans made these things, there’s evidence showing that. That’s objective proof: seeing the evidence of man’s hand, and not confusing that with the objective proof that shows some of these are notably different and actually produce effects (such as the Beer-Lambert) that aren’t ever present in the hoaxed ones.

       So-called “objective proof” goes both ways. One can’t simply dismiss evidence that is inconvenient for one’s personal belief.

If you want to see an excellent way of thinking about this topic, especially in regard to the notion that theres been nothing presented that we havnt recognized as humanly influenced, then you should take a look at what Astrophysicist Dr.Neil DeGrass Tyson has to say about possible intelligent life.

    He explains that there is only a 1% difference in DNA between a human and a chimpanzee and that theres obviously no way of us intelligently communicating with a chimpanzee. He argues that perhaps the gap in intelligence between landing a rocket on the moon and a chimp learning sign language isnt very vast at all. He elaborates that the only way of really putting it in perspective is imagining a life form with a 1% difference in DNA (in the same direction of intelligence that we are to a chimp) compared to us. This in mind the notion that we would even understand any advanced geometric patterns for instance, is absurd.

We send messages to animals all the time that they understand, just because we can’t talk about Shakespeare with them doesn’t mean communication is impossible. I can understanding aliens not wanting to communicate with a species that is basically little more than constantly warring ant hives, but I don’t understand why they wouldn’t be able to send us decipherable messages if indeed crop circles are messages from aliens?     • People do all the time, this isn’t rocket science. There are even competitions. Night vision goggles are off the shelf equipment, and frankly, on a clear night with a moon in a rural area, an open field will be quite easy to work in once your eyes have adjusted to the dark … cause it’s not that dark.

        It’s only mainstream media that has you believing that it’s “just that easy to make one.”
        You really should do more research on this topic. Sure there are 3 teams that go out to do them.
        They do have night-vision goggles (wait, aren’t those expensive? How can a group of guys, who don’t apparently don’t work at all outside of making these formations, how can they afford nightvision goggles?) Could it be that technology was provided by MI5?

        On a clear night they can be seen, and often are.

        And again, for anyone who thinks they’re so easy, go out and do some, and not get caught.

13. Well, I own night vision gear. The high end stuff is pricey, but for working in a field at night where there are few if any artificial lights around and plenty of starlight, the cheap stuff would work just fine. Basically though, you’re still arguing that a supernatural explanation is more likely than a natural one. I didn’t say it was easy, just that it wasn’t impossible. I’m perfectly happy to look at links, if a half way interesting case can be made based on empirical evidence, I’m more than happy to revisit the issue. —Doug

14. Ok, night vision goggles start from about $150, which might itself be reasonable. My suspicion, in my experience with cameras, and optics, is that the cheapest one probably isn’t going to meet the needs of crop formation hoaxers.
    One of the issues is the sheer size of the formations they make. Another issue is the complete lack (excepting starlight, of course) of all light in certain areas–due to the need for discretion and not being seen. But also, durability. When in the field as much as they are, operating in near-complete darkness, things are bound to happen. Better equipment usually endures that “field use” better.
    So the next range is $275-300 range. Let’s assume that they got a good deal on some quality eq., and managed to pay $300-350 for reasonably decent equipment. There’s still (3) “full timers” on Team Satan/circlemakers. When making the bigger formations there might be 5, in addition to providing the night vision for the occasional journalist, radio personality, etc. So, at, say $325/unit, that’s still $1500, $2000, they’ve manage to come up with. We can find evidence of where Rob Irving and his crew went to school, but then after that the trail goes cold. Research hasn’t dug-up any evidence that they’re working at legitimate jobs: the only employ they seem engaged in is hawking their merchandise from their website. The point being, $2000 is alot if you’re not working, or if you’re not subsidized by someone with some cash. The debunking industry has deep pockets.
    So, at this point, I hope I’ve dispelled your fabrication that I seem to think that these formations are produced supernaturally. That mischaracterization of what I’ve said simply makes me think you didn’t actually read what I wrote earlier. Allow me to restate my position: there is a sub-set of these formations that is produced by human beings; there is a sub-set of these formations that is produced by a means other than the 3 dimensional world we experience through our 5 senses.
    I don’t suppose I can entirely blame you for not reading the whole essay. I did present alot of facts and information, most of which is not “wild speculation”, as you’ve claimed. On that subject of speculation, relating to extra-dimensional beings, if one believes in angels, that would be an example of an extra-dimensional being. Am I saying that it’s angels who produce these things? No, not as such. I will say this, that physicists like Michio Kaku is able to mathematically prove up to 11 dimensions.
    What I am saying is that a human being operating on a different dimensional level could produce these things with the right equipment. It’s been proposed by engineers and physicists like Richard C. Hoagland that it’s a “torsion wave” of sorts that could produce the formations, replete with the spirals, ripples, and other myriad patterns that the stalks fall in.
    I don’t see other dimensions as “supernatural.” Supernatural is outside of nature. If our universe can consist of up to 11 dimensions, then a 4, or 5 dimension being isn’t “supernatural.” It’s no more supernatural than an x-ray machine, or an M.R.I. machine. Science to a sufficiently un-evolved race is considered magic…or witchcraft.
    Unless you are considering human beings to be the most advanced thing in the universe.
    I mean didn’t you, in your very last blog, post that picture from the Hubble, with like 500 million galaxies? If, as you claim, there is a huge number of “Earths” (which can be considered wildly speculative); are you of the untenable position that all of those given “Earths”, those livable worlds are simple carbon copies of Terra, which is our Earth?
    Hopefully you’re wise enough to see that Nature operates in all manner of ways, filling in all voids with life, of an infinite complexity and diversity.

    As to links to empirical evidence by the researchers, I have to apologize. I made a number of claims in my original post which I never accredited. Don’t know how it passed through all the re-reads I did on that thing.

      Team Satan, the alleged crop circle makers, must love the attention they have been receiving from the British press this year. It seems whenever you switch on the TV or open a newspaper there they are: standing in a field of wheat, wielding planks of wood, bits of string and generous amounts of their somewhat dubious talent. At the very least these guys are skilled at fooling people, particularly the media; and they have been so successful you could be forgiven for thinking that the media actually wanted to believe them.

      Of course anybody who visits a number of formations throughout summer knows full well that the aforementioned tools could not possibly be used in making large numbers of crop circles. The implied methodology just doesn’t work; it defies basic logic. To create formations that display large scale weaving, multi-directional layering, pathways a few stems wide and feather light layering of the wheat into waves and whirlpools, not to mention the severe heat damage to the plants and, on occasion, insects, observed by myself and numerous others, requires a method of construction that people such as Team Satan are simply not capable of. They have proved this point on many occasions; in fact, every public demonstration of circle making by these people contains all the evidence needed to conclude that they are indeed, not the circle makers. But still they make their claims, and still, without fail, the media, publish and promote the idea that their planks are responsible for the incredible formations that continue to appear in large numbers and in completely inexplicable circumstances on almost every night of the summer.

      No doubt, these guys and a few even less talented locals do make a few formations each year, we have seen them at it on various occasions. The consequences are what one would expect from a group of heavy men stomping on the corn with chunks of wood. The end result looks flat, rough and messy and displays a total lack of style, fluidity and finesse. This is completely in contrast to the majority of formations examined by myself and others. Even though Team Satan’s formations may look terrible on the ground with some clever photography and editing things can look dramatically different. With a computer, photo enhancement and some technological trickery anything is possible, at least in terms of appearances. So it doesn’t even matter if they produce an unconvincing crop circle, by the time the formation gets on TV it will, all of a sudden, look very good. Quite simply these people are out to convince the public that they are making the formations but anybody who has studied and examined the crop circles will know full well that they just aren’t doing it.

      This conclusion is based on extensive observation and experience with a large number of formations, including man made formations over the previous few years.

      This years hoax promotion by the Mail On Sunday 3/9/2000, with Team Satan as the stars is a classic example of our media taking a subject that will not sit comfortably with the established view of things and then trying to rubbish it. What a shame. This is a subject that is crying out for some honest and sensible investigation. Instead of honesty and integrity we get lies and arrogance. I wonder how long the Mail can get away with lying to its huge readership on such a regular basis. The article in question, regarding the flimsy claims of Team Satan (what a silly name) is so full of irregularities and inconsistencies that it would be hard for anybody to take seriously. Aside from the problems with the details of the hoax claim, the article itself looked like a piece of pure tabloid journalism.

      With this article, Team Satan provided a set of diagrams showing how the Avebury Trusloe, magnetic field (moiré) formation was constructed. It appears that there are some problems with this plan of construction. Crop Circle Researcher Michael Glickman explains:

      They stated in The Mail on Sunday, September 3rd 2000 . . .“Using 120ft of tape, an inner circle is made. On this circle, make a mark every 4ft, 60 in all, like minutes on a clock.”

      Let’s briefly examine this bullshit! The diagrams imply that the tape is held at the center and swung around the perimeter. Therefore the circle is of radius ( R ) 120FT. The diameter ( D ) will thus be 240ft. We can apply the formula ( C ) circumference =2pi R. Taking pi as 3.1415. . . the circumference will be 753.96ft. If this is divided into 4ft units, there will be 188.49 of them! Dividing the circumference into 60 equal bits produces a unit of 12.566ft, which is more realistic.

      I think we know these people well enough by now to be unsurprised by their blatant lies. Yet it still irks that the British press is happy to treat its readership as mindless idiots. Michael Glickman

      Unfortunately it doesn’t end there. A quick look at Team Satan’s web page reveals some other interesting features: including recruitment ads for MI5, MI6 and GCHQ plus offers of “A Career in the Intelligence Services.” When we inquired via email about the ads Team Satan assured us that they were just an “ironic gesture.”

      Maybe so but when we told Peter Hillmore – the journalist responsible for The Mail on Sunday’s piece on Team Satan – about the advertisements he too assured us that they were just an “ironic gesture.” So the fact that he didn’t mention them in his article was, we assume, just a coincidence. Even more notable is the fact that the advertisements themselves were embossed with the words “Crown Copyright.” meaning that if you wanted to use them you first had to obtain the approval of the advertisers. We leave you to figure that one out.

      The fact that Team Satan are prepared to make such claims is a measure of their contempt for the British public. Do we deserve it? Well the fact that The Mail on Sunday is one of the countries biggest selling Sunday papers really leaves that question wide open. Ed.

    • NBC TO LEAD NEW WAVE OF CROP CIRCLES DEBUNKING.

      THE BACKGROUND.

      As the 1998 crop circles season begins, the detractors of the phenomenon are at it once again. And this year they come better prepared and better financed than ever before. As with the Doug and Dave episode- which made two elderly pub chums responsible for the entire crop circles phenomenon in 1991 (see ‘Men Who Conned The World’)- this time it’s the turn of Californian television company Tri-Crown Productions to lead events. Whether they are sponsoring, even instigating this deception is not known at present.

      The American company flew known hoaxer Rod Dickinson and accomplices aka Team Satan/circlemakers to New Zealand’s South Island, to create a large design on farmland, and well away from the objective eyes of seasoned researchers, in what can only be seen as yet another attempt by the media and their backers to discredit crop circles, and further dupe the public into accepting a human hand as responsible for the 10,000 or so worldwide cases of crop circles.

      The event will be broadcast during May 1998 by NBC, under the title “Unmasked: The Secrets of Deception”. It will then be shown around the world.

      According to the hoaxers, “We were asked to design a complex crop formation that could be made at night in under four hours. The formation we designed had over 100 flattened circles and a diameter of 300 ft, putting it on a par with some of the most complex formations to appear in the fields of England over the past few years.”
      WILL THERE BE ANY EVIDENCE?

      That the formation made by Dickinson and Co. is an excellent, if imperfect, work of art is acknowledged (despite the crude representation of a Mandelbrot Set in the centre). Despite many poor hoaxes each year this one is by far the best man-made effort to date.

      But as always the problem for hoaxers is that not one of their attempts has ever passed any tests of authenticity, some of which were standardized by 1989, long before man-made formations were in vogue. In fact, much of the hard, uncontaminated evidence was collected prior to that time when even the media were rarely aware that any kind of phenomenon was taking place.

      It has only been in response to a dramatic rise in the complexity of the phenomenon, followed by mass public appeal, that the authorities made concerted efforts to debunk the issue with well-orchestrated hoaxes. Fortunately, researchers have painstakingly discovered that the trail from each televised incident usually ends with the British government, and other authorities. In one cabinet meeting at Westminster, discussion even took place as to how thw phenomenon should be debunked and discouraged. This evidence was published or reported by and credited to George Wingfield, Armen Victorian, Jurgen Kroenig, and others.

      What will be interesting to see in the upcoming ‘expose’ is whether any tests were carried out at the site by neutral parties, post-construction, which indicate any signs of authenticity. In the past this has met with aversion, even a retraction of statements by hoaxers (they have also been known to claim genuine formations as theirs, yet they have consistently failed to provide any evidence to back their claims).

      No hoaxed crop circle has ever produced the singlemost characteristic associated with the genuine phenomenon: plants whose stems are bent, not broken. Other anomalies include alteration in the crystalline structure of the plants themselves, also unfakable, and alterations of the local electromagnetic field There is the ability of the plants to grow after being laid, indicating they are alive and have not been trampled; possible alterations in soil chemical composition; distorted and more rapidly germinating seeds; and severe loss of groundwater, just to mention a few.

      Some hard evidence that has surfaced comes from an article in The Southland Times which described the episode. Apparently the team and the TV production crew employed the services of two 40-ton cranes just to lift the lighting, to enable them to be filmed at night- and most importantly, allowing the hoaxers to work in perfect lighting conditions. This action alone was reported to have attracted a crowd of fascinated onlookers and the local police; again, an action impossible to get away with in England, where 90% of the world’s crop circles appear.

      WHY REMOTE NEW ZEALAND?

      One has to wonder what on earth possessed the small film company to go half way around the globe to find a wheat field. According to The Southland Times, the television company chose New Zealand because of its long-time involvement with the country. This will have to be taken at face value until further investigations are made.

      An alternative reason contains more sinister overtones: crop circles have never been reported in New Zealand, and there are no crop circles researchers in New Zealand, certainly no one capable of identifying any physical features pertaining to a genuine crop circle; it is a country conveniently located as far away as possible from all those capable of analyzing the situation, and sparsely populated (sheep outnumber the population 10-to-1. The farmer is so remotely located that it will take some time to find him. In short, New Zealand may have been the perfect location for anyone wishing to construct fake crop circles without hassle.

      Had they chosen Kansas, Alberta, or any place in Europe, there would simply have been too many people available on-hand to go on-camera and ask awkward questions, such as that all plants in man-made formations are crushed underfoot, nullifying the very first criteria of authenticity.

      Other researchers and I have made preliminary contact with the reporter and editor of The Southland Times but we either get no reply or a brush-off. I strongly urge you to contact the newspaper and politely ask them to come clean.

      QUESTIONS REGARDING LOGISTICS.

      The hoaxers claim four hours was the time limit imposed for construction, which is the absolute maximum given time of darkness in the English summer, typically when crop circle season is in full swing. To construct 104 circles, the three men would have therefore taken no more than 2.3 minutes to make each circle. Just to make, mind you. No breaks, no measuring, no allowance for the exact placing of the design, or movement of planks, poles and string, not even a toilet break. This in itself should have been a supernatural achievement for three fit men.

      In the past, during monitored events, it has taken a team of two people up to an hour to make a not-too-disheveled 70 ft circle. But I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and assume that 2 minutes for a circle was achievable, no matter how poor the outcome. This leaves no time to survey the area and place poles on the exact spots where one would lay a circle according to a pre-planned blueprint- the simplest and most accurate means possible for executing a complex design; and in this case it was a fairly complicated design (even though all the elements were naively copied from known genuine crop circles).

      For this I will draw from a recent study by Rod Bearcloud Berry in Arizona who took the trouble to ask two engineering firms how long they would take just to plot a survey on the ground for the design of 1997’s awesome 264 ft Star of Solomon fractal at Milk Hill (below), which boasted a record 204 circles along its perimeter (which would have allowed just 1.1 minute per circle alone, and in a far more densely populated and monitored location). The estimate came in at 6.5 to 7.5 days IN DAYLIGHT, with an additional 4 days should the work be carried out at night.

      In a similar trial in 1994, it took five men two full days, working in bright daylight, to produce the simple, but pretty flower crop circle for Arthur C. Clarke’s television programme, Unsolved Mysteries.

      You will also note from the aerial photo (above) that the center of the formation has two incriminating marks either side of the tractor lines, presumably where the central poles were attached in order to plot the large circle, if not the entire design. In the highly complex Milk Hill formation from last summer (left), the center lies in the middle of pristine standing crop. But you probably won’t hear this in the documentary.

      From this evidence alone any intelligent person can deduce that it probably required far longer than “four hours of darkness” claimed by Dickinson to produce this formation from initial surveying to final execution. (It now has been discovered from a local and a confidential source that the team staked the entire design beforehand using string and poles).

      ISSUES OF TRUST

      It has to be said that from the air the circles of the New Zealand hoax look messy to the trained eye, specifically the central one- not a good start for a fresh formation; especially incriminating are the lack of spiraling vortices normally associated with genuine circles, where the plants are tightly rotated to imitate Golden Mean spirals, the mathematical progression used by nature. Had this masterpiece appeared as a fresh formation in England any seasoned researcher would have had little trouble labeling it a hoax just on sight alone. Of course, the same cannot be said here since there were no researchers in this remote corner of the world. And just in case any were tempted to fly there, the formation was hastily mowed down after it was photographed.
      WHY THE FEAR?

      Which brings me to ask, what is motivating the media to plan, year after year, programmes containing unfair, biased accounts, when it would make more intriguing viewing to have both sides tell their stories? There are enough people who have researched this subject first-hand to fill several hours’ worth of footage. Yet all their evidence is systematically withheld, manipulated or simply ignored.

      Perhaps the most important question we should be asking is, who is behind this colossal manipulation of the public’s trust?

      People who have successfully infiltrated hoaxer gangs in the past say that they are being paid an enormous amount of money to go about their disruptive techniques. In the case of Doug and Dave, the duo’s origin was traced to the British military. Other known disrupters, such as Robert Irving and Jim Schnabel- collaborators with Dickinson in the past- admitted in a secretly taped conversation that the hoaxing and debunking is being carried out with the total support of the American, British and German secret service, ironically the countries which have made the only concerted efforts at debunking the whole phenomenon in their respective countries. Schnabel also went on to reveal how a “supernational organization” is behind the whole scheme. (Ironically, Schnabel later admitted in his book he was certain that despite the hoaxes there was still a real phenomenon behind it all.) The complete transcript was published in Magazin 2000 issue 93, 1993.

      It was also revealed by an ex-police Sergeant-turned UFO researcher that farmers in England were paid by the military to cut down any crop circles on their land the moment they were discovered, whether the crop was ripe or not. This story was corroborated by a number of farmers who naturally wish to remain anonymous. In a similar incident in upstate New York, a landowner was approached by a Highway Patrol officer and offered money to cut down a fresh crop circle (although the resilient person told the officer where to stick his money- brave soul).

      Have crop circles become such a threat to the establishment? Why?
      WHAT YOU CAN DO

      Certainly this situation is not too late to change. Networks today may be manipulated by all sorts of hidden strings but at least they will listen to mass dissension from their audiences. The only people who will change this situation is you.

      If you feel strongly about what you have read here please contact NBC and declare your displeasure at their attempt at portraying a one-sided argument against the crop circle phenomenon, and that unless they are prepared to address both sides of the issue in a balanced and honest approach they should think twice about airing a program full of biased, distorted facts to a public who, for the most part, is not being given a fair chance to know any better.

      Like Gandhi, it is always more effective to complain politely.

      UNMASKED: The Aftermath.

      NBC’s ‘Unmasked: The Secrets of Deception looks, at first, like an elaborate and very well funded shot at killing crop circles for good in the minds of the American public – a thinly-disguised piece of propaganda. No doubt viewers who are not aware of the intricacies and the evidence supporting the genuine phenomenon will have bought the simple explanations offered; but response from educated viewers has so far produced unanimous anger that NBC should have pulled such a hoax on them. It appears Secrets of Deception was itself deceptive.

      An analysis of the programme.

      Although the hour-long segment could have been better used to portray both sides of the story, producers decided to opt for a blatantly slanted approach using a ‘by-association’ ploy, and dedicating just fifteen minutes to one of the most complex phenomenons (for all the costs of producing this in New Zealand, it is simply amazes that such a small amount of footage was used). The idea was to undermine an established belief in crop circles by associating them with other seemingly fraudulent subjects.

      The programme begins with hidden camera footage of gambling cheats caught in the act- by far the most compelling evidence of the whole hour. The evidence is real, it’s on camera, no actors are needed to re-enact the event. This sets up credibility for the rest of the show. An excellent trick.

      But then someone dropped the ball. We get into the scams of seances, a topic both fairly and unfairly targeted over the decades. Many psychics exist that are genuine, and many cases abound where they have even helped police solve crimes, to give one example. But hidden wires that send candelabras flying through the room? Er, I believe the last time that kind of parlour trickery was used was during the Victorian era.

      Then comes mind reading. Again, the programme hams it up with some hocus pocus, ‘look how a mind reader can read what you wrote on a card by looking at the reflection in a cup of black coffee’. I learned something here, actually- did you know that all mind readers drink black coffee for the purpose of cheating? I didn’t. Come to think of it, I don’t ever recall as much as a cup of water being present anywhere near a table involving a mind reader. Bizarre (incidentally, coffee is a stimulant, and working with the subconscious requires a relaxed mind).

      This is followed by a dubious reenactment of a supposed psychic surgeon at work. Just as they do in all walks of life, some charlatans must surely abound in this practice. But if these people made as much money as doctors in the privatised care system you can be sure they would sue the pants off NBC for this kind of ridicule. My chiropractor had a gall stone removed by one of these ‘frauds’- he has the scar to prove it and the gall stone.

      By now the audience has been warmed up. The world is not what it seems- you should distrust anything that falls outside the realms of ‘normal’ behaviour. Especially those nasty crop circles, says presenter Judd Nelson, who was last seen in The Breakfast Club.

      The Lies and Half-truths.

      The segment starts with some pretty aerial footage of crop circles (mostly genuine ones). Then Judd gets serious:

      “Researchers say there’s no physical evidence of human construction.”

      This is half-truth. Researchers will tell you traces of human involvement are not present in the genuine phenomenon. In hoaxes you will find post holes, disturbed soil where there previously had been post holes, and evidence of human construction because the plants are simply crushed to death, the soft soil is compacted in and around the area or footprints abound on top of flattened plants.

      “that there’s no disturbance of soil , nor footprints.”

      This is a lie. The soil in England is made of clinging mud which will leave footprints on it or the crop if you try and enter the area. At a conservative estimate, 60% of crop circles are made on rainy nights which makes signs of entry pretty easy to find. Secondly, the soil contains small, fragile chalk balls which disintegrate when lightly crushed between the fingers. These will be powdered in the event of people walking-in with planks.

      “Researchers mention the enormous size of the patterns- that it is not possible to create such patterns in so little time.”

      The circle fakers in New Zealand said the challenge was to create a pattern rivaling the best of British in under four hours, the maximum amount of darkness in the English summer. Here they took over five and a half (and two days to survey and stake out- but you didn’t hear this on TV). Their formation consisted of 108 circles. Compare this to the 196 circles of the Triple Julia at Windmill Hill, the 208 at the Star of Solomon, and the 1600 elements in the ‘Four Cubes’ of 2000. And it’s not just the size, it’s the features, the anomalies, and the use of natural spirals- just from the air a trained eye could see that the NZ hoax was made with flattening equipment. And despite the number of cirles in hoaxes, their sizes tend to be far smaller than genuine crop circles.

      “No one has ever been caught- until now'”

      Suggesting that the event was caught by hidden cameras? Utter lie. The team was paid to do this for TV. They stayed for several days at a local hotel, with camera crew. There was a crowd of local people watching them work- even the farmer showed up to watch. And yes, the Wessex Skeptics team were once caught in the middle of a design in England, just as Team Satan would be in 1999 as they made another formation for the BBC (ironically they were caught in total darkness, and by another group of hoaxers).

      Then NBC shows us the Olivers Castle video footage of a crop circle being made by balls of light. Here is the ultimate irony- this video WAS a hoax, the perpetrator was caught and criminal charges are being brought against him. NBC claims that this is what researchers say creates crop circles. Not so. The majority of honest and unbiased researchers exposed the video as an attempt at discrediting the community over a year ago. What they do say, which is based on eyewitness accounts and genuine footage, is that incandescent balls of light and structured craft are present at crop circles events.

      “Another discovery is made as the sun rises over the crop.”

      Lie. There was no discovery. A discovery implies you stumbled upon it without prior knowledge. This was set up from the beginning.

      “Made by unknown visitors.”

      Lie. Their names are Rod Dickinson, John Lundberg and Will Russell. It will say so on the production release sheet.

      “The NZ newspaper report asked the standard questions.”

      Half-truth. They asked basic journalistic drivel. Inquiries to the newspaper have met with obstruction or total silence. They simply do not wish to investigate the matter, a contradiction of journalistic raison d’etre. This is a similar attitude to the Today newspaper which brought out Doug and Dave (since proved to have been orchestrated).

      “Their car parked at some distance for a clean getaway.”

      Lie. It was parked by the road where a crowd of onlookers oversaw the whole incident. Not that you saw that on TV.

      “with nothing but the moonlight to help them.”

      Blatant lie. Two very powerful lights had to be hauled using forty ton cranes. You couldn’t couldn’t get away with this in England, hence another reason why New Zealand was such a convenient location.

      “Often the ground is hard.”

      Half-truth. Often the ground is muddy in English fields. It has been known to rain these. However, the soil in a crop circle is often hard compared to the soil outside, suggesting a heating component is involved. Infrasound and microwave energy is known to do this. But not planks of wood.

      “When footprints are found, researchers attribute them to visitors, making it a win-win situation.”

      Lie. When footprints are found it negates one of the criteria for validation, hence why researchers try to get to sites before anyone else.

      “upon arriving at a predetermined location in the crop, our team assembles.”

      Ah, I thought Judd said earlier that no one had been caught until now! Suddenly they are ‘our’ team?

      “once the center is staked out a tuff of wheat is left standing.”

      Lie. The center of this formation was in the tram line where there is no circle or wheat to flatten.

      “no stake is placed on the ground. A team member holds the tape as the circle is made.”

      Interesting. If you take a look at the overhead footage shown, there are only three people involved, all working individually on each of the three legs of the design. To have someone hold a tape would therefore require six people. So this footage was shot seperately, a common trick. Besides, we now know each circle had already been staked out.

      ‘communication is a series of silent signals, holding planks of wood in the air.”

      Ludicrous. Go into a field in the middle of the night, when anything 10 ft in front of you has as much luminescence as a lump of coal, and see if you can create a perfect geometrical alignment with your partner 980 ft on the opposite end (as was the case at the Triple Julia Set). This is laughable. At least, guys, make the planks white; oh, but then there wouldn’t be much point in wearing black camouflage, would it?

      “batting down by boards is what makes the intricate woven patterns that baffle researchers.”

      Lie. The only thing that batting down of plants makes is a field that looks like tufts of greasy, uncombed hair. Weaving- which is very much a real part of the real phenomenon- is created when up to five layers of plants are laid in counterflow to each other IN DISTINCT PATTERNS of lay, one below the other. This means that crop has to be selectively flattened in one direction and again in another, and so on. No hoaxer has ever accomplished this, even in monitored trials during a competition in 1992. What is more impressive about the weaving is that since the stems are bent, steamed and rehardened into a new, permanent position, when you try and lift these layers back up, the still-undamaged plants break. One thing that will achieve this is a change in the earth’s magnetic field: the plants’ roots are geotropic so they grow towards the source of gravity, ie. down. In genuine crop circles the plants roots have shifted sideways, suggesting an alteration to the magnetic grid (and since proved).

      “the circle makers aren’t interested in sacred geometry. If it works out that the design means something to those who discover it all the better.”

      This is an admission of ineptitude since sacred geometry is hard to encode in a canvas as imprecise as a wheat field, yet it has been proved that it exists. Sacred geometry, or Euclidian and Pythagorean geometry for that matter, relies on fixed mathematical values- it either exists or it doesn’t. One simply cannot arrive at it by chance. By saying that all that geometry is a figment of our imagination they are, in essence, discrediting the whole principle of matter, since sacred geometry is found at very basic levels of nature, even at the sub-atomic level.

      “having said that, the key to the crop circle is the tram lines- they are exactly 48 feet wide, which is divisible by 6- an important number in sacred geometry, and the circles in this formation are divisible by six.”

      Now they DO believe in sacred geometry. Please, someone make up their mind! But they are not talking geometry, they are talking NUMEROLOGY. We have no way of checking if the tram line width was correct, but from personal experience the shortest tram width is 55 ft, with some as wide as 80 ft. The ludicrous thing is they made no attempt at overlaying any principles of geometry over their design, which would have made a more compelling argument- in fact no geometry was shown. From an overhead shot of the formation I can tell you that the basic hexagonal sacred geometry would not fit this design by any stretch of the imagination- the arms of their design were laid at the wrong angles.

      “they made the jump from traditional artists to covert artists in 1994, when they first made crop circles.”

      In other words, they were made unemployed in 1994. By then, over 5000 formations worldwide had been discovered. Since then this group insinuated to have made several impressive formations in England, but none of their ‘claims’ are ever substantiated. In fact, all that is certain is that they have made only a couple of commissioned formations.

      “making sure not to leave any incriminating evidence behind, they make a clean getaway,”

      No doubt applauded by the large group of local people who had seen the event, as described by the local paper. We even know the hotel where they escaped to. Very corny indeed.

      “the dark world of deception.”

      One which NBC, its backers, the producers of Unmasked: The Secrets of Deception”, and their original source for this blatant piece of disinformation certainly live in.

      In the end, no research was shown, no comparative analysis permitted (the formation was immediately cut down), and no counterpoint was allowed by anyone unconnected with these criminals. To be fair, I was asked by John Ludberg to contribute any questions, which I did; not one made it on air.

      There has never been a doubt that hoaxed crop circles exist – the figure rises and falls every year. But a hoax is a forgery, and forgeries require an original to copy. So, who is behind the real phenomenon?

      One thing this ‘documentary’ did get right was said right at the beginning: “crop circles are one of the most misunderstood phenomena”.

      With shows like these, it’s no wonder.

      • A Brief Education
        Of Crop Circles

        Crop circles are not a modern phenomenon.

        They are mentioned in academic texts of the late 17th Century, and almost 200 cases- some with eyewitness accounts- have been reported prior to 1970. Since then some eighty eyewitnesses from as far away as British Columbia have reported crop circles forming in under twenty seconds; cases are often accompanied by sightings of incandescent or brightly-coloured balls of light, shafts of light or structured flying craft.

        Serious attention was given to the simple circles in 1980 in southern England. The designs appeared primarily as simple circles, circle with rings, and variations on the Celtic cross up into the mid-1980s. Then they developed straight lines and created pictograms, not unlike petroglyphs. After 1990 the designs developed exponentially in complexity, and today it is not unusual to come across designs mimicking computer fractals and elements that relate to fourth dimensional quantum physics. Their sizes have also increased, some occupying areas as large as 200,000 sq feet. To date there have been over 10,000 reported and documented crop circles throughout the world, with some 90% emerging from southern England. While many still go unreported each year, the emegence of the phenomenon in the world media and the internet has allowed more information to be lodged.

        If you happen to buy the story that all crop circles were originated by two sexagenarians with planks of wood, string and a weegie board, you are not in the minority. Once in a while, governments like to control public interest in unexplained phenomena by generating a disinformation method called ‘debunking’, a technique invented during the Cold War for the sad purpose of controlling mass opinion in the face of unexplainable phenomena (this was the prime motive of the 1953 Robertson Panel, details of which are obtained under the US Freedom of Information Act). The method is very effective because the media provides little or no scientific or factual data with which the public can form an educated opinion on the subject. This absence of evidence is then replaced by ridiculing the subject through association with other ‘fringe’ topics; so-called experts are brought-in to explain away all the events as freak weather conditions or the work, general pranksters, even sexually excited animals!

        According to TV documentaries, all crop circles up to 1992 were made by two simple, elderly men called Doug and Dave. It has since been discovered by researchers such as George Wingfield and Armen Victorian that the D&D story was tied to the British Ministry of Defense- in collusion with the CIA, among others. Evidence supplied by a high-ranking informant in the British Ministry of Defence suggested that the government had every intent to discredit the phenomenon by putting forward two hoaxers in an effort to quell growing public interest in crop circles (for a fuller story see Crop Circles History 1991). When confronted to provide evidence on certain claimed formations, Doug and Dave changed their story, even reversing previous claims; or they simply remained silent when asked to explain the list of features found in the genuine phenomenon. When they claimed making all the formations around the English county of Hampshire, for example, it was pointed out that half the known formations had actually occured in another county- “Er, no, we didn’t do those either,” they replied. In the end, not even Doug and Dave knew which ones they had made. And although they claim to have made hoaxes since 1978- at the time the published date of the first design- evidence witheld confirmed crop circles dating back into the 1930s. The public has never heard these retractions, nor been given the opportunity to compare the mess created by D&D with the mathematical symmetry of the real phenomenon.

        In 1998, however, the surviving member of the deceptive duo did make an incredible admission to British newspapers that he’d been guided by an unknown force.

        Since Doug and Dave’s inauguration, many copycat hoaxers have appeared on the scene. Some do it to disprove or derail researchers, some for profit, some because they are sociopaths, some because they genuinely believe they can communicate back to the phenomenon (with very interesting results, I may add). Prior to 1989 the hoaxing problem was virtually unheard of. After 1990 designs of man-made origin vary by year- in 1992 and 1998 it was as high as 90%, in 1996 as low as 20%.

        That people with a good amount of training can go into a field and eventually create a coherent pattern has never been the issue- recently, a group of known hoaxers called TEam Satan/the circlemakers was paid to go to conveniently out-of-the-way New Zealand to make an elaborate formation for The Discovery Channel. The deceptive tactics used to trick a viewing public into accepting the hoax theory are dealt with here.

        The issue is that no man-made crop circle has satisfactorily replicated the features associated with the real phenomenon, and this has baffled scientists and researchers. Crop circles are created by a force seemingly at odds with modern science. Central to the hoax argument is that a physical object is required to flatten the crop to the ground, resulting in the breaking of the plant stems. In genuine formations the stems are not broken but bent (left), normally about an inch off the ground at the plant’s first node. The plants appear to be subjected to a short and intense burst of heat which softens the stems to drop just above the ground at 90�, where they reharden into their new and very permanent position without damaging the plants. Plant biologists are baffled by this phenomenon and farmers, who know how the land ticks, are baffled by this. It is the singlemost method of identifying the real phenomenon. Research and laboratory tests suggest that microwave or ultrasound may be the only method capable of producing such an effect.

        Crop circles are sometimes accompanied by trilling sounds, since captured on tape and analysed by NASA as artificial in origin, with a harmonic component in the infrasonic range.

        The detection of electromagnetism also differentiates genuine formations from fakes. This naturally-occuring energy is known to exist at ancient sites such as stone circles, long barrows, tumuli, dolmens and menhirs, and in churches and cathedrals which were built upon these sites. Crop circles, sacred sites and other places of worship are also found upon intersecting points along the Earth’s invisible energy grid, and the size and shape of a crop circle is typically determined by the area of these ‘node’ points on the Earth’s surface. The frequencies of this energy are associated with changes in brainwave patterns and affect the body’s biophysical rhythm, so it is not unusual to find reports of people experiencing heightened states of awareness and healings in crop circles- a situation also common to sacred sites. People may also experience dizziness, disorientation and nausea- effects caused by prolonged exposure to infrasound or microwave frequencies.

        Biophysical evidence includes plants’ expanded epidermal walls, and drastically extended node bends in fresh formations (normalright, crop circle far right); also observed are distortions of seed embryos, and the creation of expulsion cavities in the plants as if they have been heated from the inside. In genuine formations there is a disruption of the plant’s crystalline structure, as these microscope photos demonstrate. Yet in all cases, the plants are not damaged and will continue to grow and ripen if left untouched. This would not be possible had they been trampled by force.

        Genuine crop circles are areas of gently laid and swirled plants which create a floor in mathematical proportions similar to the Golden Mean, the vortex nature uses to create precision organisms such as shells, sunflowers, the spatial relationship of the bones in the human hand and galaxies. The floor of crop circles can have up to five layers of weaving, all in counterflow to each other, with every seed head intact and placed beside each other as if arranged in a museum case; the centres can contain nested, woven, crested, or wreathed swatches of plants- sometimes the center will consist of a single standing plant.

        They are not perfectly round but slightly elliptical (a hoax, requiring a fixed central rope, cannot achieve this adequately). Their edges are crisply defined from the flattened crop as if drawn with a compass and incised with surgical precision. Hoaxes, by comparison, bear a stylistic resemblance to tuffs of greasy, uncombed hair- and, of course, all their plants have been trampled, bruised and crushed.

        Other anomalies indicate an increase infra red output within and around a new formation, indicating that both the heat content of the plants and the watershed have been affected. Evidence even exists of four non-naturally occuring, short-life radioactive isotopes in the soil inside genuine crop circles (these dissipate after three or four hours); the soil in around them appears to have been baked.

        Mathematically, genuine crop circles encode obscure theorems based on Euclidian geometry as well as the unalterable principles of sacred geometry. They have the capacity to alter the local electromagnetic field so that compasses cannot locate north; cameras, cellular phones and batteries fail to operate, and aircraft equipment fails whilst flying over them. Then there are levels of background radiation up to 300% above normal, radio frequencies falling dramatically or rising sharply within their perimeters, animals in local farms avoiding that particular area or simply acting agitated hours before one materializes, and car batteries in entire villages failling to operate the morning after one is found nearby. In some of the major events, entire towns are left without power.

        Since genuine formations materialize at crossing points along the Earth’s magnetic energy currents, they are influencing the energy pattern of local phehistoric sites. They reference local Neolithic sites in size/shape/direction, and are dowsable upon entry, with as many as 150 concentric rings of energy outside their physical perimeter. In fact, a year after they have been harvested and the field ploughed and re-sown, the energy imprint of the formations will still be dowsed, long after their physical traces have vanished.

        This area of research has allowed for the possibility of crop circles as a healing force, and they are already being successfully employed in radionics, flower essences and resonance therapy around the world, both for people and environments in distress.

        Crop circles are generally formed at night between the hours of 2-4 AM, traditionally during the shortest evenings of the English year when darkness lasts but four hours, in fields eagerly watched by farmers, military, laser alarms, scientists or hundreds of enthusiasts in their sleeping bags hoping to be the lucky ones to witness a crop circle forming. Some of those lucky few have witnessed large balls of brilliant colour project a beam of golden light into a field which next morning displays a new crop circle.Yet despite many stakeouts and fields rigged with top surveylance equipment, crop circles have appeared out of the mist right under the noses of those looking for them. On one occasion, the Circlemakers even materialized in full view of the British Prime Minister’s heavily-guarded country residence.

        At Stonehenge in 1996, a pilot reported seeing nothing while flying above the monument, yet 15 minutes later this huge 900 ft formation resembling the Julia Set computer fractal, and comprising 149 meticulously layed circles, lay beside the heavily guarded monument. It took a team of 11- including myself- no less than five hours just to survey the formation.

    • lmao…this issue is a hotbed of discussion. I wonder if you’d realized how much so when you posted it! I do hope that you revisit this issue with more objectivity that M.I.T., and the BBC had.
      Sure there’s lots that are hoaxed. Noone disputes that. But even if say, half, are real, there’s still a phenomena that needs some real, scientific research. I’m of the opinion that more than 50% are non-hoaxed.

        Crop circles are organized harmonic forms that manifest around the world, the result of an energy interacting with the physical world – in this case plants.

        This energy is comprised of light, sound and magnetism. To date, crop circles have been reported in 29 countries, and have appeared in media such as wheat, barley, canola, trees, ice, rice paddies, even linseed.

        Contrary to popular perception, crop circles are not a modern phenomenon. They are mentioned in academic texts of the late 17th Century, and over 200 cases have been reported prior to 1970. Some eighty eyewitnesses – as far flung as British Columbia and Australia – have reported crop circles forming in under twenty seconds; these witnesses describe sightings of incandescent or brightly-coloured balls of light which either precede a crop circle or are actively involved in its creation; in some cases shafts of light have descended onto a field and swirled the crop into a geometric shape in less than fifteen seconds. Such reports are often described by farmers.

        Only around 1980 was serious attention was finally given to the phenomenon, primarily in southern England, where 90% of designs are reported. The designs appeared primarily as simple circles, circles with rings, and variations on the Celtic cross. By the late 1980s they had developed straight lines, creating pictograms not unlike the petroglyphs found at sacred sites throughout the world. After 1990 the designs developed exponentially in complexity, and today it is not unusual to come across crop glyphs mimicking computer fractals and elements expressing fourth dimensional processes in quantum physics.

        Crop circles have also increased in size, some occupying areas as large as 200,000 sq ft. To date there have been over 10,000 reported crop circles.

        If you happen to buy the media-fed misrepresentation that all crop circles were originated by two sexagenarians called Doug and Dave, you are not in the minority. Once in a while, governments like to control public interest in unexplained phenomena they cannot control by ‘debunking’ – a technique developed by the US government after WWII for the sad purpose of controlling mass opinion (as stated in the 1953 Robertson Panel, details of which are obtained under the US Freedom of Information Act).

        This method is very effective because it makes use of two extraordinarily simple tools of mass control – ridicule and fear. But only if you are prepared to believe everything you are told on television and newspapers, particularly when TV programmes suppress scientific or factual data with which the public can form an educated opinion on the subject. This absence of evidence is then replaced by ridiculing the subject through association with other ‘fringe’ topics; so-called ‘experts’ are brought-in to explain away all events as tricks of the imagination – freak weather conditions, drunk students, even sexually excited animals!

        According to many media reports, all crop circles up to 1992 were made by two simple, elderly men called Doug and Dave. However, it has since been discovered that the D and D story appears to have originated at the British Ministry of Defence. Evidence supplied by a high-ranking informant in that government institution suggested that the British government had every intent of discrediting the phenomenon by putting forward two pranksters in an effort to quell growing public interest in crop circles (the full story appears in ‘Secrets In The Fields’). But when later confronted to provide evidence of their alleged creations, Doug and Dave changed their story, even reversing previous claims; they could not even explain the unusual features found in the genuine phenomenon.

        When they claimed making all the formations around the English county of Hampshire, for example, it was pointed out that the majority of known formations had actually occurred in another county – “Er, no, we didn’t do those either” they replied. In the end, not even Doug and Dave knew which ones they had made.         A hoax is a forgery, and forgers require a genuine from which to copy. So, what exactly lies behind the genuine crop circles?
        Stems bent but not broken

        In genuine formations the stems are not broken but bent (left), normally about an inch off the ground and near the plant’s first node. In special cases, the stems are bent six inches from the top of the seed head. Such features defeat the hoax argument, since a plank or garden roller is required to flatten the crop to the ground, resulting in clear damage to the plants.

        The plants appear to be subjected to a short and intense burst of heat which softens the stems to drop just above the ground at 90º, where they re-harden into their new and very permanent position without damage. Plant biologists are baffled by this feature, and it is the singlemost method of identifying the real phenomenon. Research and laboratory tests suggest that infrasound (sound below 20 Hz) is capable of producing such an effect. High-pressure infrasound is capable of boiling water inside the stems in one nanosecond, expanding the water, and leaving tiny blowholes in the plants’ nodes.

        The pressure applied also causes the water to steam, and it is reported by farmers that when they stumble upon a new crop circle they see steam rising from within the design. This process creates surface charring along the stems.

        The tremendous application of local heat is also responsible for altering the local water table, as millions of gallons of surface and sub-surface water is evaporated. With the heat and electro-magnetic frequencies applied, it has been scientifically documented that soil samples taken from within crop circles show changes to its crystalline structure and mineral composition.

        Expert analysis concludes that such a process requires temperatures of 1500º C and sub-soil pressure typically found in strata thousands of years old. Evidence even exists of four non-naturally occurring, short-life radioactive isotopes in the soil inside genuine crop circles (these dissipate after three or four hours, causing no adverse side effects); in fact, the soil in and around them appears to have been baked. Hardly the kind of anomalies created by pranksters with planks!

        Crop circles also show existence of ultrasound –sound above the human hearing range – and such frequencies are known to exist at ancient sites such as stone circles, long barrows, tumuli, dolmens and menhirs. And like all sacred sites, temples and places of worship – such as Gothic cathedrals – the crop circles appear at the intersecting points of the Earth’s magnetic pathways of energy; thus the size and shape of a crop circle is typically determined by the area of these ‘node’ points at the time of their appearance.

        During a surveillance project in 1989 a Japanese TV crew filmed a crop circle manifesting in the early hours of the morning, showing a swirl motion of energy lasting less than fifteen seconds. Such a rapid rate of creation confirmed the unpublished eyewitness reports.
