On Monday evening a helicopter near Los Angeles filmed what appeared to be a rocket or missile launch some 35 miles west of Los Angeles. The government immediately denied any knowledge of a missile launch, and after much speculation in the media and on the Internet, a few days later the case was solved. Yes, the Department of Defense has announced that it was a weather balloon. OK, I made that up, what the DoD is now claiming is that the “missile” was an optical illusion, merely an aeroplane flying towards the helicopter and the aeroplane’s  vapour trail.

While it’s certainly possible that this is indeed the explanation, there are a number of things about this case that are puzzling. The government’s instant and constant denial that it was a missile launch is curious, how could they know that? Someone lights his underwear on fire or mails a suspicious package, and it’s world wide military alert time. An unknown missile launch is seen near Los Angeles and it’s “So what? Nothing happening here, move along.” And then with equal assurance a few days later they claim the case is completely solved as an optical illusion? That’s convenient.

Plenty of aerospace experts upon reviewing the video have said that it is “definitely” a large solid fuel rocket, including one I personally know. And a flier I know says that a NOTAM (Notice to airmen) has been issued for the region, closing the airspace there off until further notice. If nothing is going on, why restrict flight in the region? Another source says the NOTAM was in effect before the shoot, but that also raises questions.

So what the hell went on in the skies near Los Angeles Monday evening? Beats the hell out of me. That’s the first aspect of this case that I think is important. The fact that us worms down in the mud can never really be sure what is going on. Anyone who thinks that any US government agency, especially DoD related agencies, have any credibility whatsoever has been in a coma for decades. Lies are stock in trade for the US government and DoD, yet many people, especially in the media, fall all over themselves believing everything the government says. This is neither rational nor logical, but there you have it, zombie sheep nation.

After that, it’s all speculation. First, the possibility of a launch by mistake. Seems unlikely, but not outside the realm of possibility. Despite the great PR and TV commercials, the military makes mistakes all the time. It certainly is possible that someone was running tests on a  missile or a missile launcher, and forgot to switch something into “test mode” or were unaware that previous technicians had left  a missile in a  primed state so to speak. And one can see why the government wouldn’t be wanting to admit a mistake like this was made. So, maybe.

Was it a deliberate test of some sort? Obama is in Asia now, some have suggested this was done to demonstrate, well, something, to China. It’s not outside the realm of the believable. Governments, and especially militaries, love to play cat and mouse games with each other. This could have been done for example, simply to see how the Chinese reacted or how the US public reacted, or both. Misdirection is one of the most powerful weapons a military has, even if the US knows exactly what happened, encouraging China to waste intelligence assets on a non-event is a win situation.  (This by the way is why the US government might drop hints that it has contacted extraterrestrials, if it keeps  Chinese and Russian intelligence assets investigating swamp gas, all good. But I digress.)

Lastly, could it have been a launch by a foreign power or even a  private US company? Well, half a dozen countries have submarine launched missiles, and some US corporations have at least some missile capability. Neither is terribly convincing as an explanation to me. It’s hard to imagine why either would take this sort of risk, and to what end? Granted maybe one of our enemies is testing us, or maybe a foreign submarine had an accidental launch. I’d think the DoD wouldn’t be quite so blasé about this, but maybe the foreign power in question immediately contacted the USA, and it was decided to cover it all up. I mean, if a British submarine had accidentally launched a nuclear missile near Los Angeles, good bet both governments would want to hush the story up as quickly and efficiently as possible.

In conclusion, I dunno. The reason I blogged about this is because it is an interesting case to speculate about. And because I think something is up, sooner or later the government is going to need some sort of excuse to default on its debt, or more likely, raise taxes on the poor and middle class to near confiscatory levels. I’m not big on conspiracies, but they do happen, and I can’t but help but wonder if this mystery missile was a dry run for something more serious. My suggestion: Watch the skies!
